The fact that a substance is legal often gives off the impression that it is generally safe to use. While this is true for some things, you will find that there are a lot of exceptions to this rule, and we mean a lot. One of the most heavily debated topics on this is which is safer: marijuana or alcohol? Now we are all familiar with the legality of each substance; if you are under 21 you cannot have any sort of alcohol, and marijuana is legal in 16 of the 50 states as a medicinal herb.
So since alcohol is completely legal when you’re over the age of 21, one would assume it would be safer to consume, than marijuana, which is illegal in all states for recreational use. However, this is not the case, and in this article we will cover exactly why that is.There are numerous reasons pointing to why marijuana is a safer substance than alcohol to use, some of them just a tad bit more obvious than others. For example, far too many people die as a result of alcohol every year.
Whether it is because of drinking and driving or alcohol poisoning, the death toll of this substance is far too high, and it only seems to be rising. Marijuana on the other hand is a pretty different story, and you can do all the research in the world but you aren’t going to find anyone who has been killed as a direct result of marijuana. Of course, there are those that will argue there is more to a substance’s safety than just how many deaths it has caused.
This is true, but even when you take into consideration that marijuana doesn’t fall far behind alcohol; especially not far enough to warrant making it completely illegal for recreational use. For instance, even though it is true that marijuana can act as a sort of “gateway drug” to harder drugs, there is a lot of important information that is left out when that is used as an argument. For example, the people who graduate from marijuana to harder drugs are generally people who are more at risk of using drugs than others, which means that it is going to be a bit of a stretch to actually blame it on marijuana.
On top of all that, the fact of the matter is that in the end, marijuana is really nothing more than a plant. And when it comes to safety, nothing beats something that is all natural, which is exactly what marijuana is. In fact, marijuana is so safe that you will find a lot of people use it to help alleviate the symptoms brought on by chemotherapy. This is one of the more common uses for medical marijuana, and you certainly aren’t going to find any doing that with alcohol any time soon!
However, even marijuana isn’t for everyone, so it is going to be a good idea to do a little bit of reading up on the drug to see whether or not it is right for you.
